This is my first time reading a book from this author and it is also my first time reading a book set in Uganda. And i loved it!

The story follows Jaamaro a future god of love who has writers block and cannot produce a story for his village. Jaamaro also has love problems…he cannot get and keep a girl to save his life. Because of loneliness, he nearly falls into a deadly trap that could have him and his gift dead! Now he has to go on his own personal journey to discover the nature of his gift and the truth surrounding a mysterious beauty that has him head over heels.

Ah Jaamaro my poor baby, i felt his sadness off the page. When you read it it may seem like he’s whining a lot but if you take your time and i implore you to if you pick up this book, you’ll discover that he is lonely and emotionally underdeveloped. Yet he bares the burden of being the Future God of love, a being who would one day be worshiped by Lovers from all over.

This 85 page story is short but packs a punch. I was intrigued by the new words i had to learn, while reading it you will get a feel of the words used, like Kwaro means God I think, going into the bush-Now you have to google that one yourself but the meaning is interesting. I do think a glossary was maybe necessary but at the same time i am okay with no glossary, i think you’ll appreciate looking up some words yourself and get to learn some.

In this book, the unique magic system is the story. The stories give life to a place and without them, the towns would be dried up and lifeless. So you can imagine the burden Jaamaro had to bear, producing a new story every month. Imagine if they told authors to produce books every month, i’m pretty sure they would be loads of cursing and burn out.

I liked that the stories that had to be created were not just written, they had to be acted out and had to be pictures and music to accompany it. One can image a big bun fire night where this story is told and i am sure it would be fun. You can also image how much this would be a big burden for someone to do EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH…bruh!

When it comes to the world building i think the unique spatial arrangement each community and town had was interesting. Each town was different and the arrangement and architecture reflected this.

This book is easily in my top 10 for this years favorites, and i lovedevery moment of it. I recommend every one to read it. i shall be reading the authors other work A fledgling Abiba which is also available on scribd. This book has a well deserved nomination and i hope you to pick it up and enjoy a different kind of fantasy.

Thus begins Tutu’s quest for the salvation of his mother, his city, and himself.

The Lies of the Ajungo opens the curtains on a tremendous world, and begins the epic fable of the Forever Desert. With every word, Moses Ose Utomi weaves magic.

The Review

This is a review copy granted to me by Tor/Forge via Netgalley all opinions are mine.

It follows Tutu who initially set out into the dessert to find water and save his people in order to become a hero. His people are suffering from a severe water drought and to top it all when one comes to a certain age their tongues are cut off and they become dumb.

Following Tutu on his journey are other characters from the city of lies that have their eyes and ears taken from them in exchange for something. Initially he is weary of them because he has been told ”there are no friends in the city of lies” but he discovers that there is more to this saying. And so the journey morphs from bringing water back to his people to who are the Ajungo? The truth is shocking.

Everything about this book is just A+. The world that Moses built shows the corruption of power and how it is used to deliberately harm the poor in other to keep them in the dark. I loved the friendship he found in the Sahara desert, the girls were protective of him. And even though it was bittersweet, I loved how precious and necessary they were to his growth. In the harshness of the desert, they were his softness (that could still kick your butt and look pretty doing it).

I went into this book expecting great storytelling and i was not disappointed. From the first line’‘There is no water in the city of lies”. I knew i was in for a treat and boy was this an adventure. This 96-page book packed a punch, it was filled with the naiviety of a young boy who grew into the wizened man who had learnt the truth.

I also loved seeing shokologobango a name I had not heard since I was a kid, this made me laugh.

I noticed that in this book you could have all your senses complete and still not understand what’s going on around you. Until you search for the knowledge you will not find it. And that was what Tutu had to do to find the truth. And on the other side of the truth was rage, a justified rage in my opinion.

In conclusion, this book was on my anticipated reads for 2023 and I was not disappointed at all. I look forward to reading more of this author’s work. My rating of this book is a solid 4.75⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️.

2021 Round-up ( Books and Life)

Hi,

Its been a while, i’m still here and i am still growing in my own way.

This year i focused on trying to grow my Instagram community and so i was more active there than wordpress and twitter combined. Plus there’s the added unwanted bonus of Twitter being banned in my country and so i have to result to using VPN’s which is annoying because it affects my network…fuck the government i guess!

This year, i got into Thrifting books and i found stores are affordable and they deliver fast! Some of them are Hazel Books, Novel_collection , Miras Bookshelf and Book corner. I am currently building my Terry Pratchet Collection and they have all contributed to it.

I read 89 books this year, initially my aim this year was 52 Big books however , i’mma blame Jeff Bezos for this one because i got a kindle unlimited deal for six months and then i got stuck in my in their library, oops! Even though i planned on reading more Physical books this year i ended up reading only five ( we would get to that soon). I also planned to do some rereads and i did i reread six books that i loved again. I also read loads of comics, and manga’s and manhwa’s.

I discovered new authors, Clio Evans, Opal Fairchild and C.m Nacousta and Elise Winters and forthright this year all in the ever so loving genre of monster lovers….a.k.a Monster erotica, new kinks unlocked!

  3. Terry Pratchet: heard great things and i want to start reading next month if anyone has any idea on the order please let me know.
  4. Terry Brooks: heard so much about the sword of Shanara and i want to read it
  5. Robert Jordan, the wheel of time i am curious
  6. N.K Jemisin another author i hope to fully dive into next year
  7. Robin Hobb: dear lord please let me remember to pick this up in 2022 i have heard nothing but good things

There are other authors i would like to start collecting their physical books , like Kristen Banet and Annette Marie and Kennedy Ryan but right now the exchange rate of the naira is making me want to cry and so i will have to wait a bit.

Life

This year i was determined as fuck to change, my last prayer of 2020 was Dear God I don’t want to end 2021 as a royal mess like i have been since the time i came back home late 2017. And i am happy i put my back into it, spiritually i am more at peace and learning more about God and gradually loosing my religion. Mentally i am in a much better place than i was, i started letting go of loads of baggage i was carrying and letting go of the ‘ this is where i should be’ and the ‘i want to go back to how i was before the depression and anxiety set in’ and also, how and when things should be done. I let go of all of that this year and honestly, its been a relief. I reconnected with old friends and went to a wedding, met cool people and just vibed!

I also got a job this year..hazzah, adult money to buy more books yaayy!

This year i made a decision to really connect with my body and health, although that came with bouts of body dysmorphia and health scares. I am glad i got the results and did the work to understand my body. I realized that growing we are never really taught to appreciate the female body and understand its inner workings, it was always viewed as a taboo or just biology business. I got the flo app for tracking periods and it is the most informative app ever, they address loads of topics and its easy to understand and digest, i highly recommend this app for all women. This is a journey i am glad i started. Also i got into supplements this year and here are some i am currently taking

( please see a doctor and do your research properly if you are interested in any of them)

  1. Altrient Liposomal vitamin c ( saved my stomach from ulcer due to an NSAID pain killer i took)
  2. Evening primrose oil
  3. Maca Powder
  4. Cranberry

Love

I just had some weird interactions with people this year, i hope to avoid all the weirdos next year! I love my peace though!

The Review

If you like reading books that talk about books, this one is for you.

At the start of the book Rintaro is introduced to us, he has just lost his grandfather and it isn’t until the end of the funeral that it really hits him that his grandfather is dead. Rintaro the main character is shown to be a bland character at the beginning of the book, he was just and average school boy with nothing special about him. Until the day a talking Tabby cat named Tiger enters his shop and there begins an adventure like no other.

The beauty of this book is the character development. From the moment that cat enters the bookstore Rintaro begins to transform with each task he faces. He goes from a hikikomori ( a shut in) to a compassionate person. I loved this, watching Rintaro Blossom and come into his own being was beautiful to read. He faces each task with a deep wisdom and his love for books. The bosses of the Labyrinths were not easy to deal with and as they went further there were more handicaps introduced, i like that these handicaps contributed to Rintaro’s development.

Something to be said about the Labyrinth ”Bosses”, i could help but think these people are present in today’s world especially in the *ahem* book community and yes including the publishing industry. I have been guilty of some of the crimes ( aside from cutting up books that’s just sacrilege) and although some of what they ( the bosses) say makes sense, Rintaro goes deep down as a book lover to find the real truths behind their worlds. And it all boiled down to Do you really love books?

The cat, in my opinion was an excellent guide, he always news when to step in to help and when to leave Rintaro to it. I think his Grandfather sent him from the other side to help him. Tiger is one sassy cat though and he is sarcastic to the core. I liked him and when it ended i missed him . I think readers would cosy up to this sassy companion of Rintaro.

This was an Easy read and i recommend it, when i make my second book list of Japanese Books to read its definitely going up there. This is a magic realism book about books and i think if you love books you should pick this up.

Hello, I Am Back

HELLO!!!!

Its been four months since i said…i need a damn break. And so i did take a break and it was glorious.

I felt my brain actually open up ( well not literally) after resting. I didn’t have to keep up with what’s coming out or the endless drama being that happens on book twitter.  It felt good to just read the books i have without worrying about if i am late on a review or if i am doing well enough on my blog or if i am posting enough to be called a legit blogger. Ah yes, i also ran out of ideas on what to post and i am seriously contemplating deleting some of my old posts but for sentimental reasons…I BLOODY HELL WILL because yeesh i read some  of them and asked who the fuck wrote this?

I am back and i will commit to posting three times a week, i will update my review policies when i catch the spirit to do so and i will review books ASAP. 

So if you are new to my blog, hey , hi welcome. If you have been with me for a while, i thank you for sticking with me. You’ll be seeing me more often this year! I hope I build a solid bookish fam from around the globe!

Blogtober Day 2: Halloween TBR

Its Day 2 of blogtober which means this is the time i declare my love for halloween and then mention that i give out garlic sweets to good kids.

Ah..but that’s not what the header said-

Today i bring you my Halloween TBR. This halloween i want to be scared shitless, i want to leave my lights before bed.

So here’s what i intend to read:

  1. Mexican Gothic: I heard this on has the spooks and i am ready to be scared.
  2. Lost Gods by Brom: A physical copy i got at waterstones, i am hoping
  3. No longer human by Junji Ito: Junji has been hailed by as the master of horror, and he is for a very good reason. I have seen some of his works and I am convinced home boy scares even the devil…so i’ll be reading his adaptation of Osamu Dazai’s no longer human. Say a prayer for me.
  4. Rivals! More Frenemies that changed the world: While this is not a scary one i have listened to the first version and i loved it, some interesting history of people being dickheads while altering history as we know it. Fun stuff
  5. The Visual MBA by Jason Barron: Non-fiction is scary because its reality…and i have to read this.

Well that is all for now. I will be taking part in the black sffathon which is starting on the 10th so i’ll be back with a list of what i plan on reading. So until then i’ll catch up with my tbr.

Welcome to Blogtober!: But First Let’s Wrap-up

Hello My lovely humans!

Ah the dryness is sipping into the air here, Harmattan season is crawling up on us. For you elsewhere in the world its fall season, pumpkin spice latte season and HALLOWEEN! ( my favorite Holiday ever). Or maybe its summer or its already winter (goodluck).

Right now i am plotting my whole list of what to blog this month, its also my Bloggiversary this month 3 years since i started!

But first Let’s wrap-up last month.

What I Read

Higher is waiting by Tyler Perry: I am currently on a journey of healing and Tyler is one of the people i look up to, love him or hate him you cannot deny that the man has worked his way up from grass to grace. It’s a spiritual guidance book and it is packed with gems. For my Christian peeps and also non-Christian, If you are interested in healing soul, this book is a good start.

Emergency Skin By N.K Jemisin: My first book by the Queen and i loved it! Her writing is intelligent and her world building is superb. And that’s just from the glimpse i got, i am excited to go through her work.

The falling by [ J.C Owens]: I wasted money on this book and it pissed me the fuck off. It had so much premise, so much! And then it turned to shit in the middle and utter crap at the end.

How to Elude a Vampire by Alice Winters (VRC : Vampire related crimes): This book was actually better than the first one but it still had the problem of ”too much humor” so it was a good 3.5 stars. You may like it so try it out.

Comics

The Book of Chaos [Issues 1-4]

[ARC] Slaughterhouse- five by Kurt Vonnegut adapted by Ryan North: Mama i read a classic this year! My theory is that all classics should be graphic novels, that way people would read them. Ryan North did a brilliant adaptation of this book and i cannot recommend it enough.

Fatale [Volume 1 and 2] by Ed Brubaker: If you are looking for a halloween comic try this one, there are five volumes and the first two are available on kindle unlimited.

Audiobooks

Emergency Skin: I read and listened to it, Jacob Isaacs did a wonderful job.

The gentleman from Peru by Andre Aciman: Yes he’s the one that wrote call me by your name, no i am not going to read that book because…no. However, I love reincarnation and past lives stories so i picked up this one because of that. I hated the female lead she was in my opinion insufferable. Raul deserved better.

A villain for Christmas by Alice Winters: Now this i did enjoy, i think in this book Alice used the humor properly and it was fun to listen to. August and Landon were the cutest people ever. Do check this one out, it makes an entertaining reading.

The Zeta Family by Gretchen Enders: I read this because of Inkish Kingdoms and i loved it! Its a wacky story about Katie who joins a cult to get an expose on the leader Zeta Doug, when she gets there things aren’t what they seem and their members are also wacky! Another fun listen my dudes get on this.

Life

Well i started a healing journey, i realized i have been carrying a lot of junk in my mind and they were weighing me down. One of them is fear, i am afraid of so many things i realized that i am not as adventurous as i used to be. I will be turning 26 soon and i want to leave that all behind and start being the person i need to be. Learning to forgive myself and be patient is sometimes hard, i find myself slipping into nihilistic mindsets and i have to jerk myself out of them if not i’ll become Neet 2.0 ( my anime peeps know).

Anime

I am back to watching anime again although its mainly old ones ( no i haven’t watched God of highschool yet i will binge it soon). Here’s what i watched in September

August was a good month for me aside from the sad news of the Chadwick Boseman passing on. It put a damp on my spirit. I felt like i lost my hero. I pray he is at peace with God.

Recipe to try this month

I want to start making my own body creams so i have been scouring pinterest for Cocoa butter recipes to try. I chose cocoa butter because i want to smell like chocolate 24/7 and also because of the benefits it has on the skin. I found this recipe on Little green dot and that’s what i’ll be going with, it should be easy to do.

3/4 cocoa butter + 1/4 coconut oil

  • Melt them together in a bain marie
  • freeze the mixture for 20 minutes
  • whip it with a handheld mixer

Learning

I am currently reading up on adaptogens and how they help the body, from regulation of hormones to boosting of moods. I’ll link them at the bottom if you are interested take a peek.

I am also planning on reading Storm in a teacup : the physics of everyday life by Helen Czerski and the lean Startup by Eric Ries.

Life In General

I am hoping for a mental transformation this month. I started a bullet journal and also the Chloe Ting Challenge i am on day two and i want to die already. I have plans which i can’t talk about yet but i am working towards them. I am committed to enjoying the process and learning how to be patient with myself.

And that’s all. I pray September treats everyone well. I pray for transformations where you need them.
